# What is Documentation CI/CD?

**Documentation CI/CD** is the practice of updating documentation the way software teams ship code: every product change automatically triggers a documentation update, which moves through checks and a human approval gate before it is published.

The name borrows from software CI/CD (continuous integration and continuous delivery), where every code change is built, tested, and released through an automated pipeline. Documentation CI/CD applies the same idea to help centers, knowledge bases, and developer docs, so the documentation changes when the product changes, not weeks later.

## How a Documentation CI/CD pipeline works

A typical pipeline has five stages. The fourth one, the human gate, is what makes it CI/CD rather than automatic publishing.

The five stages of a Documentation CI/CD pipeline.

Trigger → Draft → Check → Approve (human gate) → Publish. The next product change starts the pipeline again.

1. **Trigger.** A change signals that docs may need updating: a merged pull request, a ticket moving to done, a request in a chat channel, or a recurring support question.
2. **Draft.** The pipeline reads the change and its context (the code diff, the ticket, any linked spec) and drafts a new article or an update to an existing one. Most pipelines use an AI model for this step.
3. **Check.** The draft is checked before anyone reviews it: house style, claims it could not verify, and impact, meaning the other articles the same change has made out of date.
4. **Approve.** A person with documentation judgment reviews the draft and approves, edits, or rejects it.
5. **Publish.** Approved changes go live. An update to an existing article replaces the live version in place, at the same URL.

## What Documentation CI/CD is not

It is often confused with two neighboring ideas. Each answers a different question.

| | Documentation CI/CD | Docs-as-code | AI writing assistant |
|---|---|---|---|
| Answers | When and how docs change | Where docs live | Who writes the text |
| Starts when | The product changes | A writer commits | Someone asks it |
| Human gate | Required | Code review | Optional |

Documentation CI/CD can run on a docs-as-code repository or on a hosted knowledge base. And without the approval gate, it is not CI/CD, just automatic publishing. Software pipelines have gates too.

## Why teams adopt it

- **Docs fall behind the release cadence.** When engineering ships daily and docs are updated by hand, the gap grows with every release.
- **AI support assistants answer from the help center.** A stale article becomes a wrong answer given to a customer.
- **Fewer writers cover more product.** The pipeline handles detection and first drafts, so writers spend their time on judgment and review.

## The building blocks

- **Triggers** connected to where change happens: code repositories, issue trackers, chat, and support desks.
- **Context:** the diff, ticket, and linked specs each draft is built from.
- **Impact analysis:** finding every article a change affects, not just the obvious one.
- **Quality checks:** style linting, for example with open-source tools such as Vale, and a list of claims the draft could not verify.
- **An approval gate** with a named approver and an audit trail.
- **Publishing** to the platform the documentation already uses.

## Common questions

### Is Documentation CI/CD the same as continuous documentation?

They overlap. Continuous documentation usually means keeping docs in sync with code, often inside the code repository. Documentation CI/CD describes the full pipeline from trigger to approved publish, including documentation that lives outside the repository, such as a help center.

### Does it require moving documentation to Git?

No. The pipeline can publish to a hosted knowledge base or help center through its API, as well as to a docs-as-code repository.

### Who approves the changes?

Usually a technical writer, or the product owner where there is no writer. The approver is the gate. Nothing is published without their approval.
